Love the look of knitting… but prefer crochet?

This is one of those stitches that surprises people.

Because when you’re finished…it actually looks like knitting.

The shallow stitch crochet technique creates a smooth, firm fabric that closely resembles stockinette stitch — but it’s done entirely with a crochet hook.

What makes this stitch different?

The stitch itself is simple.

The only difference?

Where you insert your hook

Instead of going under the top loops like a regular crochet stitch…you work into the vertical strands next to the stitch.

That’s what creates that knit-like look.

Step-by-Step: How to Crochet the Shallow Stitch

Step 1: Find the vertical strands

Look at your row and locate the vertical strands running up and down your stitches. (See highlighted stitches in light green in photo)

This is where you’ll be inserting your hook, between those vertical stitches.

Step 2: Insert your hook

Insert your hook into the center of the two vertical strands.

Step 3: Yarn over

Yarn over your hook. Then draw your yarn back through the stitch.

Step 4: Pull up a loop

Now, with 2 loops on your hook, yarn over again.

Step 5: Pull through both loops

Pull the loop on your hook through the remaining loops.

You’ve just completed the stitch!

Repeat:

Continue by repeating steps 1-5.
