Triple crochet (abbreviated tr) is a tall crochet stitch made by yarning over twice before inserting your hook.

Because it’s taller than double crochet, it creates a looser, more open fabric.

Step-by-Step: How to Triple Crochet

Step 1: Chain 3 (or 4 depending on yarn)

Start by chaining 3 if using bulky yarn, or 4 for smaller yarns.

Step 2: Yarn over once

Wrap the yarn over your hook.

Step 3: Yarn over again

Wrap the yarn over your hook a second time.

You should now have two yarn overs on your hook.

Step 4: Insert your hook

Now, insert your hook into the next stitch.

Step 5: Yarn over

Wrap the yarn over your hook.

Step 6: Pull up a loop

Draw the yarn back through the stitch.

You’ll now have 4 loops on your hook.

Step 7: Yarn over

Yarn over your hook again.

Step 8: Pull through 2 loops

Pull the yarn through the first 2 loops.

You now have 3 loops remaining.

Step 9: Yarn over again

Yarn over again.

Step 10: Pull through 2 loops

Pull through the next 2 loops.

You now have 2 loops remaining.

Step 11: Yarn over again

Yarn over one more time.

Step 12: Pull through last 2 loops

Pull through the final 2 loops.

You’ve just completed a triple crochet stitch!

Step 13: Repeat

Repeat steps 2-12 for each triple crochet you want to make!
