How to Use a Needle Gauge (Measure Knitting Needles & Crochet Hooks)

Not sure what size your needles or hooks are?

Have you ever picked up a knitting needle or crochet hook and thought…

what size is this again?

This happens with:

  • older tools
  • interchangeable needles
  • double pointed needles (DPNs)
  • or hooks where the size has worn off

That’s where a needle gauge tool comes in.

What is a needle gauge?

A needle gauge is a small tool that helps you measure the exact size of your knitting needles or crochet hooks.

Once you have one of these, you won’t be able to live with out it!!

Step-by-Step: How to Use a Needle Gauge

Step 1: Understand the measurements

Most needle gauges include two types of sizing:

  • US sizes (like US 8, US 10, US 13)
  • Metric sizes (like 5.0 mm, 6.0 mm, 9.0 mm)

On most tools:

  • US sizes are labeled on one side of the holes
  • Metric sizes are labeled on the other

Step 2: Find the closest fit

Take your needle or hook and insert it into one of the holes.

Try different holes until you find the best match.

Step 3: Check the fit

You’re looking for a hole where the tool:

  • slides in smoothly
  • fits snugly
  • has no extra space around it

If it’s too tight → go up a size
If it’s loose → go down a size

Step 4: Read your size

Once you find the perfect fit:

Check the number next to the hole

That’s your exact needle or hook size.

An essential tool in your knitting or crochet bag, you’ll use it over and over again — especially when you’re switching between projects.

And you’ll never have to guess your sizes again!
