Confused by yarn weight numbers?
It’s actually so much simpler than it sounds…
Definition: Yarn weight = the thickness of the yarn strand.
That’s it!
I also created a free printable yarn weight cheat sheet you can download below!
Why yarn weight matters:
Different yarn weights create completely different results in your projects.
The yarn you choose affects:
- how thick your project will be
- how quickly it works up
- the texture
- the stitch definition
- and even the final size
That’s why patterns recommend specific yarn weights and needle or hook sizes.
Where to find yarn weight on a yarn label:
Look on your yarn label for:
A small ball of yarn symbol with a number inside
That number tells you the yarn weight category.
